Greasemonkey was one of the most widely used third party add-on on Mozilla FireFox. Greasemonkey will soon be available for Google Chrome users — working on this single-serving enhancement add-on for Firefox.

In a blog post Monday, Aaron Boodman, the developer of the Greasemonkey add-on for Firefox, announced that Chrome version 4 and later will support most of the JavaScript-coded Greasemonkey scripts without any additional tweaking necessary. This includes all available builds for Windows (stable | beta | dev), Mac (beta | dev), and Linux (beta | dev). Chrome converts the JavaScript directly into a Chrome extension as it’s being installed, and the new add-on lives as an extension in Chrome’s Extension management window.

While this potentially adds 40,000 Greasemonkey scripts to Chrome’s growing extension catalog, Boodman estimates that between 15 and 25 percent of them won’t work on Chrome because of coding differences between Google’s browser and Firefox.

He rightly warns readers that Greasemonkey scripts can give the script author unfettered access to personal data, so it’s important to check reader comments and ratings before casually installing one. In my test of Flickr Image Size, a script that forces all available images sizes to appear as links in Flickr, I encountered no problems.

Type Chrome OS on Google and you will find millions of hits of how people all around the world are eagerly awaiting the new Chome OS by Google. Bloggers, Web developers, app developers, social network user and the common man are all eagerly awaiting the Chrome OS to help them get rid of the Windows ache. Most are eager, cause its “GOOGLE” and its free. I mean it must be something really huge right ?

Well, disappointingly NO. There’s nothing much that the new Chrome OS is going to change. Nothing new its going to bring. No new technology, nor any new features. What they are going to provide is already existing. All they are doing is combining multiple “free” features of the internet, and attaching the Google logo behind it.

Lets break down the OS shall we, into the features that it being build around.

• Cloud Computing
• Google Apps
• Offline Applications
• Quick/fast internet access

Hey just wait a minute here. Isn’t all this pretty much what a browser of today does ? I mean google’s chrome browser already is fast, and supports all of these features. For those of you blinking your eyes wondering what Cloud Computing is, its a new technology where all your data is stored online on multiple servers, and you can access them anytime from any where on the planet, with just a personal ID.

So back to my point, why have an online operating system that pretty much does what a browser does, with a few little tit bits here and there ? A new operating system means leaning new techniques of using the system, having to install software’s and applications from scratch. Basically, you have to learn to do a lot more things all over again, that you were already doing.

Remember our good old friend Linux ? Ever tried working on him ? Sure he’s a little tough to work with, to understand and to navigate around. But hey he’s free right ? He’s a millions times more secure than Windows, so secure that there is no concept of a anti virus on Linux. And you have millions of users around the world, even from your own country for Customer care. Well, if its so easy and simple, why isn’t everyone friends with him? Well its because people don’t have the patience to learn new ways to do things that they already know about. Tell me honestly, would you say yes to a person who says “Hey i’ll show you a new way to breathe through the ears. That way you have to worry about your nose running, or catching a cold.”

Imagine the nightmares that might crop up when you suddenly have to work on an urgent project and the internet is not working. Or maybe if a situation arises such that you have to allow someone else to work on your computer temporarily. For them to access their files means you have to log out of your account, log theirs in, and wait until they finish. There is no possibility of people actually sharing a computer.

And here’s the most important feature of the OS that is overlooked. Its built on LINUX ! So all that google has done is taken Linux (free), added its google apps (free), some new features and security, some polishing, and whole lot of false publicity to give you their brand “new” Chrome OS, the most awaited Operating system the world over.
